Fritz Wotruba | Standing figure

The sculpture by Fritz Wotruba (b. 1907 in Vienna, Austria – d. 1975) was initially installed at the Kreuzkirche as part of the “Street Art Program” and, after a year, moved to the Nordmannpassage, where it could be encountered directly and unexpectedly, but where it could only partially unfold its impact due to the passage’s cramped urban setting. Nevertheless, the shift in how it was perceived as a result of the change in location was an interesting phenomenon: near the church building, it is often interpreted as a cross, whereas in the everyday urban space it took on the form of a human body, thus aligning with the artist’s overall body of work, in which the foundations of his geometric abstractions are often figurative.
